Huntingdon Hawks vs Bedford Bulls - Sat 26th Sep 2009

Thanks to the Bedford summer league, the fresh, new, young roster of Bedford had time to gel as a team, and it definitely showed in the Bulls first game of the season against Huntingdon Hawks away.

Bedford Bulls came out strong and never looked back, not going behind at any point throughout the match.

The Lithuanian sensation aka Dons, teamed up with Leon Thompson as they dominated the first half between them, dropping 24 points. The rest of the team soon joined in the fun in the second half as the whole team contributed and eventually overcame the Hawks with the final score at 84-74 in favour of the Bulls. A great start to the season for Bedford and a reason to sink a beer or two!

Wellingborough Phoenix vs Bedford Bulls - Sun 4th Oct 2009

Whenever Bedford meet their rivals Wellingborough, a nitty, gritty, physical battle always takes place, and that certainly was the case on Sunday.

It was very much a neck and neck match throughout, with the whole of the Bedford roster doing their bit. Despite the young bench, Bedford held their own, with great help from the rising youngsters M.Quinney and J.Govorusa both dropping 10 points each.

It really did come down to the wire with the score going into the final quarter at 68-64 to the Bulls. It looked as though they could hold out for the W, but as the clock ticked by, Wellingbourough grew stronger and stronger, finally taking a 3 point lead with 20 seconds to spare.

It was Bedford's last chance, and the ball fell to Leon "Afro" Thompson on the 3 point line, sadly resulting in a brick.

Phoenix were the better team on the day - 95 - 92.

MVP: M.Quinney & J.Govorusa   Donut: Gus

Scorers: P.Ghamsary - 2, M.Quinney - 10, L.Thompson - 10, J.Wilkins - 2, B.Roberts - 13, J.Govorusa - 10, M.Teivans - 11, D.Franzen - 4, D.Silkauskas - 30.

Vytis vs Bedford Bulls - Sun 11th Oct 2009

Bedford's trip to Vytis was definitely one to be forgotten in a hurry.

The first half was a very close fought game, although quite scrappy at times with ZILCH free throws going down for Bedford.

But the second half really was not the same story. Bedford's heads dropped lower and lower as the game went on, resulting in a best forgotten 98- 60 win in favour of Vytis. Let's leave it at that.

MVP: Leon Thompson       Donut: Leon Thompson (missed 2 dunks!)

Scorers: L.Thompson - 15, J.Wilkins - 4, B.Roberts - 7, J.Govorusa - 2, M.Teivans - 9, D.Silkauskas - 16.

South Lincs Dragons vs Bedford Bulls - Tue 20th Oct 2009

The trip to South Lincs emerged as a turning point for the Bedford Bulls. With a 1 and a half hour journey to the away court, knees were stiff, but Bedford exploded out into the first quarter hitting several shots from downtown. The 3 pointers didn't stop there either as they broke a club record, hitting 12 3 point shots in the match!

It was a brilliant all round team game, with big man Tom Hollowell making his debut, and hitting back to back baseline jumpers in the 3rd quarter.

Another man making his debut was Nick Clifton, who played great solid defense throughout.

The lead grew and grew, despite the away crowd trying to knock the Bulls off their game, chanting and whistling on every Bedford free throw.

It was the young gun M.Quinney though, that shot the lights out, not missing a single shot all night and a sweet ankle breaker followed by a jumper from Leon Thompson, that confirmed that it was the Bulls night, the dragon slayers.

Final score: 90 Bedford Bulls - 74 South Lins Dragons

MVP: Quinney        Donut: Jovan (for travelling like a gypsi in the 4th quarter!)

Scorers: P.Ghamsary - 4, M.Quinney - 11, L.Thompson - 10, J.Wilkins - 4, B.Roberts - 10, J.Govorusa - 13, M.Teivans - 4, N.Clifton - 2, D.Silkauskas - 28, T.Hollowell - 4.

Nene Valley Venom vs Bedford Bulls - Sun 25th Oct 2009

The Bulls travelled to Peterborough on Sunday, matched up against last season's champions, but they certainly caused a rumble.

The game was completely owned by Bedford's superstar Donatas Silkauskas, as he broke two club records for points at the end of the half and game, with 25 at half time and 44 at full time!

The rest of the team chipped in with a few points each aswell, leaving Nene Valley struggling for the whole match.

This match put Bedford on a 2 win streak and definitely sucked the venom out of valley.

Final score: 84 Bedford Bulls - 75 Nene Valley Venom.

MVP: Dons                  Donut: Quinney (threw a wobbly!)

Scorers: P.Ghamsary - 4, L.Thompson - 6, J.Wilkins - 2, B.Roberts - 15, M.Teivans - 4, D.Hayes - 5, D.Silkauskas - 44, N.Stolber - 4.

Bedford Bulls vs. Littleport Lions - Fri 30th Oct 2009

A balanced scoring attack served to snuff out any resitance that Littleport could muster. Travelling with only seven players and reportedly missing a couple of starters it never looked good for the Lions. Both teams started slowly but as the game wore on Bulls started to move the ball unselfishly on offence and knuckle down to execute an effective full court man to man defensive statergy.

The defensive intensity of the Bulls seem to frustrate the Lions and cause them to rush their shots and make poor decisions which led to quick and decisive fastbreak scoring from the Bulls.

Proving that the Lions can be tamed.

MVP:  Dons (unselfishness)      Donut:  Neil (fouling out in five minutes)

Scorers : D.Silkauskas - 24, S.Bukelis - 11, M.Teivans - 10, M.Quinney - 9, L.Thompson - 8, B.Roberts - 6, T.Hollowell - 6, N.Clifton - 5, J.Wilkins 3, N.Stolber - 2.

Final score: 84 Bedford Bulls - 57 Littleport Lions

Bedford Bulls vs St Neots Slammers - Fri 6th Nov 2009

A difficult game for the Bulls saw them struggle to stop an under strength Slammers side from scoring at will in the first half. The full court pressure that Bulls where trying to apply did not work and played in to the Slammers hands allowing them to fast break constantly and run up 50 first half points Bulls only saving grace was that they managed to score 41 points themselves.

After a stern half time team talk and a change of tactics defensively (switching to a mixture of half court man to man and zone) the Bulls found their way back into the game. The improve ball movement and unselfish play combined with an improved shooting percentage and fatigue slowing down the Slammers led to the final outcome.

In the end the Bulls managed to limit St Neots to 29 second half points and execute their own fast break to run out winners by nine points.

MVP:Leon (Excellent offensive decsion making) Donut:Ben (Playing poor man to man defence)

Scorers: D.Silkauskas - 28, L.Thompson - 16, B.Roberts - 16, M.Quinney - 9, S.Bukelis - 7, N.Stolber - 3, M.Teivans - 3, J.Wilkins - 3, T.Hollowell - 2, D.Hayes - 2.

Final Score: 88 Bedford Bulls - 79 St Neots Slammers

Wellingborough Phoenix vs Bedford Bulls - Sun 15th Nov 2009

A quick start against their local rivals saw Bulls edge ahead in a physical encounter, however the Flames regained the momentum at te end of the first quarter and continued their good form at the beggining of the second quarter. Silkauskas, Teivans and Bukelis kept the score ticking over and Bulls entered the break with a five point lead.

The second half went the way of the Bulls with some excellent team man to man defence being played which stifled the Flames offense and served to frustrate them. The increased depth of the bench and composure of the Bulls coupled with some excellent offensive execution led to the Bulls running out winners by 17 points. Silkauskas was the main protagonist scoring 39 points able assisted by Tievans, Thompson and Bukelis who all scored in double figures.

An excellent allroud team performance helped to erase the previous defeat they inflicted on the Bulls in the Dave Owen Trophy.

Bedford Bulls vs Vytis - Fri 5th Feb 2010

An excellent uptempo start to the game coupled with some stifling man to man defence helped Bulls to limit Vytis to six first quarter and managed to score 24 with a spread of scoring with all of the starting five getting on the score sheet.

The next quarter started evenly with both teams having scored six points after four minutes of play, however the trend changed dramatically with Vytis ghetting the measure of the Bulls defence. Vytis scored freely against some of the young Bulls players by taking advantage of some poor execution and communication defensively, managing to close the gap to two points at the half way point.

The third quarter was not much better as Vytis managed to score repeatedly from the outside with one player scoring four times from the three point line after several defensive break downs. Only twelve points from D.Silkauskas manged to keep the Bulls in touch.

The final period saw the Bulls find some of the form they displayed in the first quarter and focus on playing solid man to man defence and taking advantage of the limited depth of the vytis squad. An injury earlier in the game to one of Vytis's key players and a more concerted effort by the Bulls saw them run out winners by eight points.

The home record rumbles on.

MVP: A.Tamulvicius (Scoring five key fourth quarter points) Donut:Sigitas (Leaving the court when he was not substituted).

Scorers: D.Silkauskas - 27, M.Teivans - 11, B.Roberts 9, L.Thompson - 8, S.Bukelis - 7, T.Holowell - 6, M.Quinney - 6, A.Tamulvicius - 5, P.Ghamsary 2.

Final Score: 81 Bedford Bulls - 73 Vytis

Bedford Bulls  vs Wellingborough Flames - Fri 12th Feb 2010

A free flowing game saw Flames jump out to an early 10-3 lead which extended to 20-11 with only two minutes left in the quarter. Bulls tried to rally and finished the quarter eight quick points but it was their man to man defence that was non existent as a Flames player scored the final two of the quarter to extend their lead to 25-21.

Bulls where slow off the mark in the second quarter and repaeted defensive break downs, a lack of communication and some poor offensive decsion making saw Flames extend their lead to eleven points mid way through the quarter. Only the scring of Silkauskas and Thompson who finished the half with 16 and 10 respectively kept them in the game. Flames held a 50-39 advantage at half time.

At the beggining of the third quarter Bulls switched to a 3-2 zone and and used their trademark press to cause the flames offence to stutter. The difference was exemplified when the Bulls went on an 14-2 tear in the first four minutes to take a one point lead. Silkauskas and Thompson again did the damage during this period with the Flames going in at the end of the quarter ahead by one.

The final period saw a pair of clutch three point shots by Silkauskas and one from Roberts keep the Bulls ahead by one with only two minutes left in the game. Flames finally fell apart when a charging foul was called against one of their players in the final minute with them down by two points and a technical foul was awarded for arguing with the referee (N.Weisse who had an outstanding game on her own). Silkauskas step up to the line and sunk both foul shots to effectively seal the game for Bulls.

A tough home win which extends Bulls unbeaten home record.

MVP: Dons (Outstanding shooting and defensive presence) Donut:Ben (Airballing a freethrow)

Final score: 87 Bedford Bulls - 82 Wellingborough Flames.

Scorers: D.Silkauskas - 41, L.Thompson - 19, B.Roberts - 11, M. Teivans - 6, M.Quinney - 6, J.Wilkins - 2, P.Ghamsary - 2.

Bedford Bulls vs South Lincs Dragons - Fri 19th Feb 2010

To be replayed due to scoresheet inaccuracies.

Bedford Bulls  vs Littleport Lions - Fri 26th Feb 2010

An effective opening seven minutes saw the Bulls jump out to a 16-10 lead behind 11 points by Silkauskas and seemingly have the Lions worked out. However with just over two minutes left in the quarter the Bulls stopped concentrating defensively and the Lions to score 13 quick points to take a four point lead into the second quarter.

Unfortunately the Bulls continued not to execute at either end of the floor and fell behind by eight points early on. The game went to and fro with some stong offensive work by Bukelis, Hollowell and Silkauskas, but still no concerted defensive effort was made and ultimately the Lions increased their lead to 11 points at half time.

The third quarter saw the Bulls try to change their tactics defensively by adopting a 3-2 zone however some miss communication and costly turnovers saw the game all but slip out of the Bulls reach. The lions scored the first 12 points of the quarter and consitently caught Bedford on the break with easy lay ups that seem to deflate the Bulls team.

The Final quarter see some of the Lions players having to sit down due to foul trouble and the Bulls regain some of their first quarter form. Although the Bulls outscored the Lions by Seven points in the quarter the result was never in doubt and the Lions ran out winners by 20 points. The Bulls did not help themselves by missing 17 free throws and only hitting four times from the land of plenty.

A tough game which see's the Bulls unbeaten home record finally fall.

MVP: No one (A very poor defensive effort all round) Donut:Karolis (Turning the ball over twice on the fast break).

Final score: 72 Bedford Bulls - 92 Littleport Lions.

Scorers: D.Silkauskas - 25, S.Bukelis - 13, T. Hollowell - 13, M. Teivans - 8, B.Roberts - 4, P.Ghamsary - 4, M.Quinney - 3, J.Wilkins - 2.

Nene Valley Venom vs Bedford Bulls - Sun 28th Feb 2010

A fast start by the Bulls saw them take a 12-4 lead half way through the first quarter with Teivans and Silkauskas scoring all of the points. The rest of the quarter was dominated by defence and some questionable offensive decision making with the Bulls finishing 16-13 up at the break.

The second stanza saw Bedford Relinquish their lead and trail by seven points (37-44) going tinto the half time break. Th problems began with in the seventh minute of the quarter with Bedford turning the ball over and the Venom fibnally finding their offensive rhythm scoring nine unanswered points. The only bright spot of the squarter was Silkauskas who consistently pulled the Venom defence apart with an array of drives and three point shots ammassing a massive 24 first half points.

The half time break led to some stern words from the coach and a refocus on defensive execution with the Bulls turning the tables on the Venom outscoring them by a whopping 14 points in the period. The fire power was provided almost exclusively by Silkauskas, Roberts and Thompson with Silkauskas reaching 35 points by the end of the quarter. It was the defensive intensity that really stood set the tone and this wore down the Venom with the Bulls going in 64-57 to the good.

The final period saw the Bulls extend their with two early threes from Silkauskas and Roberts. In the end the Venom where forced to foul and Silkauskas and Bukelis calmly sunk their free throws to close the game out. Silkauskas set a club record scoring another 14 points in the period bringing his total to 49 points.

MVP: Dons (Scoring a club record and playing some kick ass defence) Donut:No one

Final score: 78 Nene Valley Venom - 91 Bedford Bulls

Scorers: D.Silkauskas - 49, B.Roberts - 14, L.Thompson - 12, M.Teivans - 7, P.Ghamsary - 4, T. Hollowell - 3, S.Bukelis - 2, A.Tamulvicius - 0.

Bedford Bulls vs Huntingdon Hawks 5th March 2010

The tone was set early on in this game with the Bulls racing to a 10-2 lead against the slugglish Hawks. Early scores from Roberts and Silkauskas extended the lead to 23-6 and strong man to man defence saw the Bulls lead 27-14 at the first interval.

The second quarter saw the scoring spread between five diffeerent players as everyone contributed to the offensive barrage. However it was the defensive intensity and execution that really did the damage with the Bulls holding the hawks to five points in the quarter and only nineteen in the first half. The only unfortunate incident occured early in the quarter when Silkauskas land heavily on his ankle and was taken away in an ambulance.

The second half saw the Hawks saw the Hawks find some kind of offensive rhythm and limit the Bulls to five points in the first six muinutes of the quarter. All of the Bulls players continued to contribute on both ends of the floor and the period ended with both teams scorinf nineteen points apiece.

Once again the final stanza saw the Bulls reassert their defensive dominance and limit the struggling hawks to thirteen fouth quarter points. The game finished with Thompson who had been excellent thoughout finished with a score to seal a 38 point victory and put the Bulls top of the league table.

Final score: 89 Bedford Bulls - 51 Huntingdon Hawks

Scorers: M.Teivans - 20, T. Hollowell - 15, B.Roberts - 15, D.Silkauskas - 13, S.Bukelis - 7, L.Thompson - 6, M.Quinney 6, P.Ghamsary - 4, M.Chrichlow - 2, A.Tamulvicius - 0, K.Prusevicius - 0.

Bedford Bulls vs Vytis - Fri 19th March 2010

A very cagey first quarter saw the Bulls miss open opportunities where they manufactured several shots that would normally hit. During this drought Vytis took advantage and went on a 9-0 scoring run until Roberts finally put the Bulls on the score sheet with a three point basket. The remainder off the quarter proved to be just as frustrating for the Bulls who dug themselves a ten point hole that they would never quite recover from. The free scoring of Silkauskas was sorely missed and the Bulls trailed 10-20 going into the break.

The next quarter saw the Bulls start with more offensive effectiveness and managed to find their rhythm scoring 21 points in the quarter with Teivans eight of those points. The man to man defense started to slow the Vytis offense down slightly limiting Vytis to nineteen points but their was still plenty of work to do with the Bulls trailing by eight points (31-39) at the half time break.

The third stanza saw the Bulls switch to a 3-2 zone which cause Vytis real problem and limited them to 13 points in the quarter. The Bulls managed to win the quarter again scoring sixteen points with some excellent ball movement and defensive execution, entering the final quarter down by only five points. This could have been only two points if a couple of Bulls defenders had not switched off as the buzzer sounded allowing one of the Vytis plkayers to catch and score a three point basket.

The final period was nip and tuck with the Bulls deeper bench paying dividends and with only four minutes remaioning the Bulls took a one point lead (60-59) but this proved to be as good as it got with Vytis execting down the stretch scring a three point shot in the final minute and one of two free throws. With nine seconds left the Bulls had the ball at the half way line after a time out down by two points. By design L.Thompson caught the inbound and used a Teivans screen but the pass made into a cutting Hollowell was to strong and an open Bukelis was forced to watch in horror from three point line as the ball was turned over and with it went the Bulls chance of winning the game.

Hopefully a learning process for the young Bulls squad.

MVP: M.Teivans (Scoring key baskets and defensive execution). Donut:B. Roberts (Missing Two key free throws after an 'unsportsman' foul).

Scorers: M.Teivans - 19, L.Thompson - 14, B.Roberts 10, S.Bukelis - 5, T.Holowell - 4, P.Ghamsary 4, J.Wilkins - 4, M.Quinney - 3,  A.Tamulvicius - 0, K.Prusevicius - 0, M.Chrichlow - 0.

Final Score: 63 Bedford Bulls - 65 Vytis

Bedford Bulls vs St Neots Slammers Fri 26th March 2010

Bedford Bulls played some excellent stuff at times moving the ball to the open player and scored exactly one hundred points.

The first quarter saw Bulls jump out to 7-2 lead with all seven points coming from Silkauskas who had just recenlty returned from injury. The quarter finished 24-14 with the Slammers struggling to find any kind of offensive rhythm and the Bulls playing decent helpside zone defense. Bukelis scored four three point field goals in the quarter on the way to a club record nine three point shots.

The second period saw six Bulls players get on the scoresheet with a combination of intense man to man and zone defense and a multiple fastbreak points cheifly from Wilkins lead to a 46-25 scoreline at half time.

After the break Thompson reignited the Bulls offense with four quick points and 11 in the quarter. Bukelis added two more three point scores to bring his total to seven. The Bulls suffered a lapse in concentration and allowed the Slammers to score sixteen in the quarter finishing 67-41 going into the last stanza.

The final quarter saw the Bulls wear down the six man Slammers and score 32 points including two more three point shots from Bukelis bringing his total to nine tripples in the game. Crichlow, Quinney, Silkauskas and Wilkins also troubled the score keeper accounting for 24 of the 32 points scored in the quarter.

Overall a satisfactory performance that has secured the Bulls a place in the league playoffs after easter.

MVP: Sigitas Bukelis (Scoring a club record Nine three point shots) Donut:Don's for rolling his ankle during a 3vs3 tournament and not being able to play the rest of the season.

Final score: 100 Bedford Bulls - 63 St Neots Slammers

Scorers: S.Bukelis - 29, D.Silkauskas - 21,  L.Thompson - 14, M.Quinney - 12, M.Chrichlow - 9, J.Wilkins - 10, B.Roberts - 5, T. Hollowell - 0.

Littleport Lions vs Bedford Bulls Wed 31st March 2010

Bedford Bulls put in a gritty and determined performance with a under strength team to come out on top against a tricky and experienced Lions side.

The first quarter saw the teams trade baskets until the Bulls knuckled down on defence to stop the Lions from scoring for the last three minutes and scoring the last 10 points of the quarter to lead 16-23 at the break.

The Bulls where finding the seams of the Lions zone defense and the Lions where making some uncharacteristic errors on offense by turning the ball over. This combination led to the Bulls extending their lead to nine points by half time (33-42) behind some outstanding offensive contributions by Teivans and Chrichlow who beat the shot clock buzzer to score a much needed three point field goal in the quarter.

After the break the Bulls tarted very sluggishly with the Lions scoring the first ten points of the period to take a one point lead, just as a time out had been called to refoucus the Bulls their offensive and defensive execution returned and they went into the final period down 54-52.

The final quarter saw the Bulls start stronglty with a three point feild goal from Quinney and five quick points by Chrichlow. The Bulls continued to move the ball and cut with purpose on offense which wore down the Lions team and the Bulls took a eight point lead with only two minutes left. This hould have been enough to close out the game but the Bulls made it hard for themselves by switching off in the final minute and turning the ball over three times to allow two quick three point scores from the Lions. Luckly the Bulls survived an outburst by Teivans and a silly shot by Thompson with only 13 seconds left on the game clock and it was left to experienced Bulls guard Tamulevicuis to ice two free throws at the end and secure the win.

Overall a very accomplished and mature performance that has shown the Bulls to have strength in the depth of their squad especially the younger players who where excellent.

MVP: Teivans and Thompson (Consistent offensive and defensive execution) Donut:Teivans (Losing his cool at the nd of the game), Thompson (Shooting the ball with 13 seconds to go when we were up by 2 points).

Final score: 78 Littleport Lions - 82 Bedford Bulls

Scorers: L.Thompson - 19, M. Teivans - 18, M. Chrichlow - 11, B. Roberts - 10, M.Quinney - 9,T.Hollowell - 6, A.Tamulvicius - 5, J.Govorusa - 4.

Bedford Bulls vs South Lincs Dragons Fri 26th March 2010

Bedford Bulls began the game by moving the ball to the open player and scoring almost at will rattling off the first seven points of the game. The experienced Dragons composed themselves early on and went on an 11 point tear themselves and finished one point ahead (12-13) at the break.

The next quarter saw the teams trade baskets with seven different Bulls players getting on the scoresheet and the score was tied at 30 apiece going into half time.

The third quarter saw the Bulls man to man defense fall apart and allowed the opposition score 27 points and take the wind out of the Bulls charge as they limped into the break down by ten points (47-57).

The final stanza saw the Bulls limp to towards the end of the game scoring only nine points and conceeding 20 points as the final deficit ballooned to 21 points.

Bulls struggled all night to find any consistency on offense and limped to a disappointing loss. Overall a poor performance that lacked any consistency or enough determination.

MVP: M.Quinney (Scoring three tripples) Donut:J.Govorusa (Scoring a three point shot off the back board).

Final score: 56 Bedford Bulls - 77 South Lincs Dragons

Scorers: L.Thompson - 10, M. Teivans - 4, M. Chrichlow - 2, B. Roberts - 4, M.Quinney - 9,T.Hollowell - 4, D.Silkauskas - 16, J.Govorusa - 7.

Bedford Bulls vs Vytis April 18th 2010 (Play-off semifinal)

The game was dominated by defense with Bedford Bulls adopting a man to man defensive style and Vytis playing a 3-2 zone. The Bulls where determined to deal with Vytis's pick and roll offense and had worked hard on it in training and the hard work paid off as we kept the opposition to a all time offensive low.

The first quarter saw both teams trade baskets in between some excellent defensive play from both sides and some poor offensive execution, the Bulls did manage to open up a six point lead but Vytis pegged them back by the end of the period to go in tied at 17-17.

The second quarter again was a low scoring affair as the Bulls continued to frustrate Vytis with some determined man to man defense. Both teams only combined for 21 points with the Bulls entering the half time break up by three points (26-29).

The third period saw Vytis find some offensive rythmn and the Bulls offense drying up with a barren five minute stretch in the quarter where they did not trouble the scorer. It was only the defensive intensity that kept the Bulls in touch going into the final quarter down by two points (43-41). Silkauskas was the only player who consitently scored totalling seven points in the quarter.

The final stanza saw the Bulls spread the scoring and execute defensively with Silkauskas fouling out with two minutes to go and the Bulls down by two the Bulls played some inspired defense stopping Vytis from scoring for the final four minutes. Vytis lost their influential point guard with over four minutes to go and the Bulls show calmness under pressure as they scored the final ten pints of the game capped by four clutch free throws by Bukelis.
