Match Reports

09/11/08 (Trophy)

RTC Nene Valley Venom 68 Bedford Bulls 58.

The Bulls came away empty handed from a close and questionably called game, losing to last years league winners.

As always, the young Bulls side let themselves down in the first quater. Govorusa getting himself on the scoresheet early scored the first 2 ponts of the game. However the rest of the quater was a different story, relying on individual play from Lesniak scroing 7 of the 9 points. The end of the first saw the Bulls down 20-9 after some bad interior defense.

We woke up in the second quater, starting out strong with Amadi and Peller scoring early, going on a 14-10 run the Bulls were now playing how they should be. A very strong second quater we outscored the home team, going into the half down by 7 (36-29).

After the half time break we knew we were in with a good chance, after some strong offensive scroring and some excellent defence. Statring the third quater how we ended the second, we kept the pressure on and kept the game tight. Some excellent play by Lesniak, Govorusa and Peller saw Venoms' key players in foul trouble and heading to the bench. With a weaker home side out, Bulls capitalised outscoring again in the quater, 49-43 down.

So there it was, fourth quater down by 6 it was all or nothing. We came along way from last season, being down by atleast 20 to 30 points at this stage in the game previously. But this was a new and stronger Bulls side and we weren't about to give up without a strong fight. We had a great start to the quater going on a 5-0 run thanks to Campbell scoring them, with a motivating three pointer the bench was making a lot more noise than the home crowd. Down by 1 it was an extremely close battle, but then we let it slip conceeding a further 12 points only answering with 6 of our own. With only 3 minutes left in the game and trailing by 6, the referee's gave Peller his last foul in the game. After that we failed to score again in the last quater.

It was a very dissapointing first loss of the season for the side, keeping it close throughout the whole game after a shakey first quater. Facing Nene Valley atleast twice more this season, we now know what to expect, so all we can do is improve on our mistakes and train hard!

01/11/08 (League)

Cambridge Cats 80 Bedford Bulls 112.

The Under 18’s team continued their strong start to the season, claiming their second comfortable victory.

The game started slow for the Bulls giving away some easy baskets and getting in foul trouble early on. Offensively the team shot the ball well, giving the ball into the post and cleaning up the offensive boards. Despite being level at the end of the quarter, down 23 – 22, the team remained motivated to come out and play hard in the next period.

The next quarter saw a completely different side to the Bulls. Starting in a full court man-to-man defence the team out-hustled their opponents, leading to some bad passes and easy baskets for the Bulls. Some excellent individual defence from Connor Washington and Clarke Campbell lead to some easy fastbreak points on the offensive end. Great defensive play from the side led to the Bulls outscoring their opponents 26 – 13 in the second quarter.

After the half-time break the Bulls led 48 – 36. Now relaxing back into a half court defence the team took their foot off the gas, relying on individual efforts on the offensive end. Great fastbreaking again from Ben Peller, Matthew Quinneth and Greg Holroyd lead to easy buckets. Some bad defensive play let the Cats back in the game, only winning that quarter 31 – 27.

Starting the final quarter the Bulls knew they needed to extend their 16 point lead. Seeing the finish line, the team played excellent on both ends of the court, once again in full court defence and pushing the ball up the court the team were playing as they should’ve done the other three quarters. Lawrence Amadi and Matt Lesniakerajakin, now having woken up finished as the high scorers for the last period. With some great rebounding and two motivational dunks from Matt towards the end, the Bulls came away victorious.

All in all a good end to a poor game for the Bulls, winning by 32 in the end. Efforts still need to be made on improving defensive decisions, still committing 16 team fouls. But other than that, a lot of good points taken from the game.

Unfortunately the table officials completely messed up the scoresheet, so individual scoring is unable to be determined!
